Try a direct finesse only when it's your only and last chance...as your chances to succeed are only 50% !
Start with less risky maneuvers...establish a long suit, for instance.
Example : you are S, playing 7♠ :
























You figure out 1 trick is missing, got to find it ! Don't start with a Q ♣ finesse. Eliminate the opponents' trumps and establish dummy's ♦. If ♦ are 4-2, you have 13 tricks. At the worst, they'll be 5-1...then you'll have to try the finesse. (board 7976)
