Blackwoods are conventional bids that enable a camp investigating a slam (around 30HCP) to know precisely the number of Aces (...or key cards) held by the camp.

Instead of showing the number of Aces, the partnefr bids his number of key cards : key vards are the Aces and the King of trump

It is used by the player bidding the Blackwood when he has a chicane and wants to know the number of key cards held outside the suit of the chicane.
It is bid by a bid in the suit of the chicane that takes the partner aback : It is always a surprising jump in the suit where the bidder has a chicane. After a support bid, a jump in a new suit that goes beyond game, is an exclusionn Blackwood. The partner then bids his number of key cards (if trump has been agreed) outside the suit of the chicane
