Detail specifications 12AC - Level 2

The opener's rebid after the responder's jump support

The jump support by the responder shows at least 4 trumps but less than 10HCP
The opener's choice of rebids :
  • With a first-zone hand (12-14HCP), it all depends on the quality of the hand: the aces, the intermediate cards, where the honors are placed, the distribution etc....PASS or go to game
  • With a second-zone hand the opener:
    • with no hope of slam calls game
    • starts the controls
  • With a third-zone hand: controls, Blackwood or Josephine...according to his hand.

Problem E9104. With this strong hand you only want to know if your P controls . Start the controls.

With a first-zone hand, the opener
  • calls game with a good quality hand, i.e. containing one or two aces, good intermediate cards and either well-placed honors or an interesting distribution or both.
  • calls game with 10 trumps in the team
  • passes with a weak hand.

The key to success at this stage is to correctly assess your hand. A 12HCP hand can often be worth much more than a 14HCP hand...

Problem E5214 4 hearts with 13HCP in a good-quality hand: a 5431 distribution, the honors concentrated in the 2 suits and the two major aces.

Hoping for slam: the controls
The opener starts the controls by calling his first controlled suit :
  • 3 spades or 4 clubs if hearts are trumps
  • 4 clubs if spades are trumps and he controls the clubs
  • 3NT if spades are trumps and he doesn't have club control. This "impossible" bid (since a strong spade fit has been found) avoids going to the five level for the club control

Problem E5210 3 spades to start the controls. With this hand, all you need to know is whether your partner controls the clubs!

Holding all the controls, the opener can ask for slam in several ways:
  • Blackwood : 4 NT
  • Slam proposal by calling 5 in the opening major. This asks: "if you have strong trumps we can call slam"
  • Josephine: 5NT. This asks the responder to call grand slam with 2 high honors in trumps. If not, to call slam.
