  • Usually you must play your highest card.
  • However, if the lead or dummy plays a master card, you can use this opportunity to indicate the number of cards you hold or else call for a particular suit, according to the situation.

In third position, when the 2 of diamonds is played and dummy plays the 4, you must take the trick with the ace. Your partner, who attacked with the 2 of diamonds, holds either 3 or 5 cards. The declarer might therefore only have one!
 
 
1st situation:Your partner leads a new suit and dummy takes the trick.
  • With a sequence, play the top card of the sequence.
  • Otherwise indicate the number of cards you hold using the odd/even system:

-with ace, king or queen plus a low card: play the low card
-with jack 5: the jack
-with jack 9 3: the 3
-with 8 6 5 3: the 6
-with 9 8 6 5 3: the 3
