In 2nd position on play of a small card, most often you should, play "small" so as not to give a trick to the Opp on the right.
If dummy has only 2 cards, then this rule shouldn't be used blindly. If you have an honor 3rd (K/Q or J) it's in your interest to play it even on a high card in dummy

You have one or several honors in your hand.
  • With 2 cards at dummy, cover on the 1st round, if you only have one honor
  • Dont cover on the 1st round if you have 2 honors.
  • If the dummy has 2 consecutive cards - don't cover on the 1st round : wait until the 2nd round. Above all, if there are 3 consecutive cards at dummy wait until the 3rd round.
