The lead in a 1NT contract
suit to lead in a 1NT contract.
- your opponents play 1NT, both sides have about 20HCP and in general each side will be able to regain the lead during the game. Above all don't give them a trick at the beginning by choosing a bad lead!
- Avoid leading in a weak minor suit. Neither of the players on the Declarer's side possesses a 5 card major. They are probably strong in the minors...
- With two 4 card majors, choose to lead in the suit that contains a low ranking honor.

You cannot lead under your aces nor in such a weak 4 card minor. The minors are the suits that are presumably the Declarer's strongest. So lead spades. With 3 cards and no honor, lead the highest, the 8. This lead is called 'top of nothing'.

Here the best lead is hearts. Choose the ace to show a suit containing AKx or AKxx. Leading with the king would show a very strong 5 card suit.

Your partner must have some points, but has remained silent. Had he got ♠, he would have named them. Try to meet him in ♣. In a NT contract, with 3 low cards, lead the highest.
