Blackwood

PDF
Blackwood bids show exactly how many aces Partner has. This bid is made when a team have approx 30HCP and is exploring a possible slam.
The main bidding systems are :
  • Blackwood asking for aces 30-41 (not advised at your level)
  • Blackwood 5 keys
  • Blackwood exclusion (this is usually bid with a void)

Problem E6282 4 SA = A direct Blackwood (no controls necessary because S has them all !)

Blackwood 5 keys 30-41
To use this Blackwood bid a suit fit has already been established. This Blackwood allows a bid, not only showing suit quality but also the number of aces at the same time.
Instead of bidding the number of aces, Partner bids his number of keys : these keys are the ace and king of the already established trump suit.
  • 5 : 3 or 0 keys 30
  • 5 : 4 or 1 keys 41
  • 5 : 2 keys and not the Queen of trump
  • 5 : 2 keys with the Queen of trump
  • 5 SA : 2 keys and a useful void
  • 6 in a suit : 3 or 1 keys and a void in the suit bid

Problem E9466 6 = I key and a void.

Blackwood exclusion
This is used by the player when he has a void and wants to know the number of aces P holds. not including this void.
He bids using the suit where he has a void. ??????? : it's always a surprising jump that the bidder uses for this bid (his suit where he has a void)A Blackwood exclusion : jump bid in another suit which passes Game level is used after a support bid, in the agreed trump suit. The Responder bids his number of aces or keys (if a trump suit has already been agreed) excluding this suit
  • one level higher =3 or 0 keys
  • 2 levels higher = 1 or 4 keys
  • 3 levels higher = 2 keys

Problem E95063 5 is clearly a bid for a suit already agreed upon : trump has already been fixed as spades and the jump bid has already passed Game level.
5 NT : one ace (not including the suit bid by P, s)

Problem 92226 5 impossible bid. Blackwood exclusion asking P to bid the keys excluding the ace of

How can you ask your P : Do you have the Queen of trump ?
You can bid this by bidding the suit just one level above :
