Punitive or take-out double?
The punitive double.
- As soon as your camp has the majority of HCP and particularly when the opps are vulnerable, favor the punitive double to looking for an alternative part score for your camp. Most of the time, you'll get a much better payoff.
- Also, remember that the double is always punitive in certain bidding sequences. In particular, after a 2level response by responder, after an overcall by 1NT on your partner's opening bid, after an overcall by your partner on a pre-empt opening bid, after a redouble and after the opps bids a suit called for by a take-out double.
