Responses to 1 suit opening bid, with no fit fit

With no possibility of showing support to opener, you can :
  • Bid a new suit to look for a fit in a Major
  • or look for a NT contract SA ...if a Major fit is impossible.
    • That is the case if the opening bid is 1 ♣ or 1 ♦
    • and ...if you do not have 4 cars in ♥ or ♠.

 
Suit changes require

  5HCP and 4 cards in the suit at the 1 level Example 1 ♦ - 1 PI
  11HCP and 5 cards in the new suit bid at the 2 level
  16HCP and 6 cards in new suit bid for a jump shift to the 3 level.
 
Without a Major to bid and with a minimum of 6HCP, look for a NT contract.
