Responder's jump shift to 2♥

PDF
Modern responder's jump shift. 2 in response to 1 or 1
In modern bridge, 2 jump shift shows a major 2 suiter : 5 , 4 , and 6 to 9 H points. It is not a strong jump shift as it used to be.This convention brings many benefits :
  • It will be frequently used
  • It is precise
  • It has got preemptive efficiency
  • It allows you to find a fit which might sometimes be difficult to find with a two suiter hand worth less than 10H

Exercise 9981 A preempt jump shoft that shows a weak hand with 5 cards in and 4 in

The new responder's jump shift : 2 after a 1 minor opening
This convention is an answer for the responder holding 5 and 4 when the opener has rebid his minor suit. Without it, he wouldn't be able to find the right bid with a hand worth less than 10H :
  • Bidding 2 on the second round who be a 3rd suit forcing
  • You need 11H for 2NT...
  • The responder knows the opener might have 4 cards, but he must pass...
With the 2 jump shift, the opener precisely knows his partner's hand...and can decide what is next !

Problem 9979: 2 would be third suit forcing... not possible with only 8H. No way you can bid 2NT. And you miss a game !

Exercise 9980: The modern responder's jump shift after a minor opening will allow you to find a contract very few other pairs will play...

The modern responder's jump shift at 2 on a 1 or 1 opening: follow on bids
The opener :
  • Passes to play 2
  • bids 2 to play them
  • uses a forcing relay at 2NT with a strong opening

After a 2 NT relay, the responder shows the strength of his hand :
  • 3 if he is minimum (5-6HCP)
  • 3 with a maximum 5-4 and a shortness chicane or singleton
  • 3 with a minimum 5-5 (5-6HCP)
  • 3 with a maximum 5-5 (7-9H)
  • 3 NT with a maximum hand (7-9HCP) and 5422
