Smith Signals are attitude signals given at the very first available opportunity by partner of the lead card player against a NT contract - generally not a suit contract - and indicates preference for the lead suit. This mainly happens when the lead card player has played the strongest of 3 low cards.
  • If East is interested in the lead suit, he plays a high useless cardPartner now knows what he should play next time he is in hand.
  • It's the complete opposite if East plays a low useless card he isn't interested in the lead suit.
