Three pieces of advice:

with 6 cards in ♦ always bid ♦
With 5 cards in ♦, bid 1 ♦ with a nice suit (otherwise 1 ♥ or 1 ♠)
With 4 cards in ♦,
- 1 ♦
  - With a very weak hand, 4 4 card in a Major and at least 3 in the other (you'll pass on next round)
  - And also with a very strong hand : you'll be better able to explore slam opportunities .
- 1 ♥ or 1 ♠ in other cases
It os often with common sense and by looking at extra and wasted values that you will find the best option.

- bidding a new suit would be 4th suit forcing...
