How to signal when a new suit is played in a NT contract.
When he plays a new suit, the leader's partner uses the same signal system :
He plays :
  • The 4th best card in a long suit with an honor
  • The 2nd card in an honorless suit
  • The highest card out of 3 low cards
  • The middle card out of 3 cards including an honor

Example : You are South. West plays 3 NT. Your partner has led ♠. But it appeared ♠ is not a good suit for your camp. When you take the lead, you want to play ♣. Which card do you choose ?

The 1st trick leader doesn't follow the same rules when playing a new suit. When in doubt, the partner will consider a low card as encouraging.
Example : You are defending in a NT contract. You have previously led 3 ♣..... During game, you are in hand and wish your partner will replay ♣ for you. ♠ is the only option if you want your partner to take the lead.
