a cue bid after an overcall is:
  • a request for information to decide on best contract, game or part-score
  • guarantees at least 11HCP
  • .. but does not show fit (he could be fitted or not).

It is the only forcing forcing response to the overcall : The overcaller must describe his hand further.He can :
  • Repeat his suit
  • bid NT
  • bid a new suit
  • bid himself a cue-bid of opener's suit
 
The overcaller repeats his suit
  • Without a jump, he shows a minimum hand 8-9HCP and a 5 card suit (generally)
  • With a jump, He shows a 6 card suit and an interesting hand

The overcaller bids a new suit
The bid of a new suit by the overcaller shows a Two-suiter. It does not say anything about strength....He can be weak or strong. His partner must show preference based on his own hand, The overcaller will then either pass.propose game or bid game.
