Problem E6146 South has a monster of a hand as a responder! he is wondering wether or not to bid 7 . It is there if the opener has two top honors in (The ace and king in that case). The opener that has them will bid the grand...unbeatable !

Exclusion Blackwood
It is used by a player that has a chicane and that needs to know the number of Key cards.... in suits other than the one where he has a chicane.

The Exclusion Blackwood is bid with a surprising jump in the suit of the chicane. It is a suit that will take his partner aback and cannot be confused with a splinter, a control or any other bid ..
His partner will then show his keycards if Trump suit has been set, his aces otherwise.
For example, after a support bid a jump in a new suit that goes beyong game level, eis an Exclusion Blackwood.

  • First level =3 or 0 key cards
  • 2nd level = 1 or 4 key cards
  • 3rd level = 2 key cards

The alternatid approach, below may be simpler...It is for you to decide
  • First level = 0 key card
