Responses to opening bids that do not show fit

Suit changes at level 1
In response to a major opening, the only possibility is a 1 response after a 1 opening. The opener may have anything between 13 and 23HL . The responder, having at least 6HL can have legitimate hopes for game. This suit change has no upper limit.Forcing, ce changement de couleur n'a pas de limite supérieure. The responder may have a choice between a suite change at the 1 level or at the 2 level. It all depends on the strength of his hand :
  • If the responder has the strength to impose game (12-13HL) he bids his longest suit at the 2 level
  • if not, he bids it at the 1 level

Problem 5439 a support bid is better than a suit change to 1 that would facilitate an overcall by the opps at 2 or 2 ..

The 1NT response
The responder may not have the required strength to bid his suit at the 2 level...He then bids 1NT which does not promise a regular hand.
