Response to a preemptive opening bid
The opener has said everything : a 7 carder, a maximum of 10HCP....and nothing else. He is promising 6 tricks.
You are the one to decide what is happening next and which contract would be best for your pair.
  • Any shift is forcing, except if it is at game level.
  • Any support bid is a prolongation of the preempt, not a game proposal; the opener shall pass.
  • With no stopper in the other suits and less than 13-14HCP, PASS

Exercise E1616 You must name such a nice major suit. You'd rather try 4 than 5. Your bid is forcing...your partner will tell you if he's got 2 cards.

After a 3 or a 3 opening bid, you should bid :
  • 3NT with 13-14HCP and stoppers in the other suits
  • With a 2 to 3 support cards and about 10HCP, raise to level 4 (this is not a game proposal)
  • Go to game (level 5) with a 4 card support and 3 tricks
  • With a strong hand but no NT possible bid, name a new suit
