Ruffing from the long hand

Ruffing from the long hand
Caution : this is not a dummy reversal, where Declarer ruffs his losers using dummy's trumps (cf F76AN). Most of the time, the declarer won't ruff with his hand (the long one) as doing so would dangerously shorten his trump suit. But sometimes there's no other choice. In this situation, the Declarer deliberately decides to ruff more than once from the long hand .
The most common situation : the only way you can make your contract is to make all your hand trumps but :
  • your trump cards are not leading
  • the trump distribution is very unbalanced (you won't be able to capture an honor - or more than one !)
You are going to ruff with your low trumps. If you start eliminating Opponents' trumps, you'll lose these low cards. For this move to work, you have to be aware of a possible overruff !

Exercise 27389 You make 3 tricks...you need to make 5 with your trump cards. But you've got only 2 honors. You definitely need to ruff 3 times with your hand (the long one). That's actually not too risky as the bidding sequence indicates a 5-3 distribution...
