PDF
The responder's (that initially bid 1) wake-up bid. The Opener has passed.
1)If Responder has at least 5 cards in a major :

  • With a 5-carder in a major and less than 10HCP, the Responder rebids his suit.. This is simply a competitive bid and not an invitation to continue bidding.
  • With a 5-carder in a major and at least 10HCP, the Responder bids with a X.
  • With a 6-carder in a major and at least 10HCP the Responder rebids his suit with a jump

Problem E5823 2 With a 5-carder in a major and less than 10HCP, Responder rebids his suit. This is simply a competitive bid and and Opener will pass.

Responder's 1 wake-up bid in the 1st round of bidding. The Opener has passed.
2) If the Responder only has 4 cards in his major :
  • With 4 cards in the other major and at least 10HCP the Responder bids his 2nd major..This unusual bidding sequence doesn't show a 2-suiter with 5-5 but shows 4-4 in the majors (not 5-4)
  • With a stopper in Opp's suit depending on his strength, Responder bids 2 or 3NT.
  • Without a stopper in Opp's suit and with the points to play 3NT Responder cue-bids Opp's suit : it's an invitation to play NT if Opener has stoppers.
